Review: Lucroit Filter Holder For The Nikon 14-24mm Lens

Everybody loves the Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens (even Canon shooters!) it's a lens famed for being super wide and offering incredible quality images but it does have its drawbacks. No filter thread means no filter holder... or does it? Well the guys at Lucroit have come up with a great filter holder to give you the ability to use lots of different filters that are made by Hitech. I was going get the 14-24mm for my Iceland trip just because I couldn't use filters with it and I wasn't too keen on the 16-35mm f/4 as I wanted an f/2.8 lens. If you go on YouTube there are a few people showing DIY ways to use filters with this lens and I wouldn't recommend any of them as accidents will happen and the last thing you want to see is a smashed filter. But when I saw what Lucroit were doing it was a good enough reason to get this lens and filter set. So I contacted them about reviewing the filter holder while I was in Iceland working for Wild Photography Holidays as a tutor. 10% OFF DISCOUNT ON LUCROIT PRODUCTS! The Hitech Lucroit holder was designed by a Spanish engineer who wanted to find a solution to both the Nikon 14-24 problem and that of other similar wide angle lenses. The holder easily fits on the lens by a solid metal bayonet mount with a retaining rubber ring which holds it in place, it fits snuggly around the lens hood making it difficult to fall off. The holder is made out of plastic so it's very light and just clicks onto the bayonet. The holder can take 2 filters which I think is plenty. It has been designed to take 165mm (which are huge!) filters with grads being 165 x 200mm (6.5 x 8 Inch). With this size of filter there is no chance of seeing any vignetting at such wide angles which is great. They are made out of resin so can get scratch marks on them if you are not careful. They sent me quite a few different filters which included grads and solid ND's up to 10 stops aka 'The Big Stopper'. The filters easily slip into the holder and fit tightly in so they cannot slip but lose enough so you can move them to compose your shot. You can see some of the images taken with these filters at the bottom of this blog post.

While working in Iceland the filters were very easy to use and would keep the filters separately in the front pocket of my CoOrdinate Gear Backpack so they were easy to get to when I would need to swap over to another filter. Due to their size it does make things a little difficult when carrying them around but this all depends on the bag you use to store your gear. When you see the quality of these filters you'll find a way to take these with you on every shoot! A question I know I'm getting to here is if there's any colour casting, I didn't see much colour casting when using the filters only when I used a strong neutral density like the 6 0r 10 stop plus a grad would I see a bit of colour casting but with the magical properties of Lightroom and Photoshop this is easily removed.

Conclusion:

After 2 months of using this setup I can say how impressed I've been with it, giving me the ability to use this lens more in the field and be more creative with my photography to get the shots that I want. The size of the filters does put you off at first but once you start using them and see the quality of the filters you will want to use them all the time. Compared to the Lee Filters this a really good price to be able to use filters with this great lens. Hitech offer a large range of different filters to use with this setup which is really good as I throughly enjoyed playing around with the 10 stop filter to get some interesting shots of clouds going across the sky. I can promise you if you go with this filter holder for your super wide angle lens you will not be disappointed, hopefully the images below provide proof of the possibilities these filters have.
